Court-Ordered Community Service

City of Salem partners with a number of different courts to allow the public to complete their court-ordered community service by completing volunteer projects in City parks. Community service workers must be 18 years of age or older to participate in this program. To set up service for minors, arrangements must be made with the Volunteer Coordinator.

 Reporting for Service


Reporting for Service

You must arrive on time. Late arrivals will not be allowed to work that day. Be prepared to work eight hours.

When you report for community service, you will need to know which court ordered your hours, and you must sign in on the appropriate clip board. This will affect the reporting of your hours served, so if you are unsure, please ask.

Monday through Friday

On weekdays, report to the Parks Operations office no later than 7:15 a.m. Weekday working hours are from 7:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays

On weekends and holidays, report to Gate #12 on 22nd Street no later than 7:30 a.m. Weekend and holiday working hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Parking is provided in the parking lot on 22nd Street or on Oxford Street.

 Dress Code


Dress Code & Supplies

Wear or Bring

Long pants or long shorts, a work shirt, and proper work shoes or work boots are required. Rain gear and a warm jacket are recommended during bad weather.

Bring a lunch and any needed medications. For example, you may want to bring sunscreen, allergy medication, aspirin, or cold medication. Once work crews leave, they do not return until quitting time.

Do Not Wear or Bring

Sandals and clothes with vulgar words or pictures are not permitted. Stereo head phones are not allowed. Cell phones may be used during lunch and break times only.



Worker Responsibilities

Attendance and Reporting

It is the community service worker’s responsibility to arrive at the appropriate work site at the correct time and on the dates agreed upon. Leaving the job site early without permission or previous approval will be treated as a no show / no call, and work credit will not be given for that day. If you are not dressed appropriately and prepared to work a full shift when you report, you will be asked to return the next day prepared to work.

Work Ethic

Community service workers are expected to conduct themselves as though they are Public Works Department employees. They are to do their work in a timely and efficient manner, taking breaks and lunch at the proper time. After being warned, if adequate effort is not exerted, workers may be asked to leave the job site, and no credit will be given for the day. Workers may not be allowed to return in the future to perform community service.


It is the responsibility of the community service worker to report for work in appropriate clothing as described in the dress code. Workers dressed inappropriately will not be permitted to work.

Time Sheets

It is the community service worker’s responsibility to make sure that time worked each day is documented at the end of each work day. Sign on the correct time sheet for your court. No time recorded is the same as not working.

Drugs and Alcohol

Under no circumstances is any community service worker to consume alcohol or be under the influence of any illegal substance while working for the Public Works Department.

Physical Requirements

This position is physically demanding. You may be expected to lift up to 50 pounds and stoop and bend all day long.


Smoking is permitted during lunch and breaks only, and is only permitted in designated areas. Smoking is not permitted in City vehicles.

Cell Phones

Cell phones may be used during lunch and break times only.


If injured on the job, you must report the accident immediately to a Parks staff person.
